October 2013 saw the choir moving in an exciting new direction – combining singing with acting in The Events – a new play written by David Greig (premiered at the The Edinburgh Fringe)
Koruso! were invited to join the Actors Touring Company (ATC) on stage at the Young Vic, to tell the story of Claire, the liberal vicar of a small seaside community. Her understanding of the world is challenged when the choir she founded as a haven for the vulnerable becomes the target of a lethal attack by a gun-toting local boy, whose head is filled with ideas of racial purity. The tale is loosely based on the Anders Breivik tragedy of 2011.
With only one opportunity to rehearse with the actors before the performance and news that the performance was a sell out – we could be forgiven for being nervous!
In fact it was a great success – Koruso! moved comfortably into the acting genre, alongside our ATC colleagues, resulting in a standing ovation with many of the audience in tears.
“It was a great opportunity for us – performing at the one of London’s most exciting theatres alongside a professional cast. It certainly gave me a buzz – just wanted to go back the next night and do it all again!” Jane, member of Koruso!
